Writing - Learn how to write a cover letter to respond to a job advert.

Do the preparation tasks first. Then, read the letter and do the comprehension activities. Later, write your own cover letter and speak about the question to reflect on.


Preparation Tasks:

Task 1: Parts of a cover letter.


Example of Cover Letter

Bonnie Baker Human Resources Manager SO16 3TW Southampton, Hampshire. Dear Ms Baker,


This is David Serra and I am writing in regard to a job position as a marketing manager as offered in www.getyourdreamedjob.com.


As outlined in my CV, I attended the University of Southampton and graduated with honors with a Marketing Management Degree. Also, I have a Master's Degree in advertising from the University of Bath. I am currently working for a firm in London, as a consultant but I am looking for a more local job position.


I always admired your company because I believe it is fresh, modern and the work environment seems young and friendly. I believe I would be an ideal candidate as I believe I represent the values of the company. I am very passionate about marketing, and I consider myself a very creative and productive person. I work well under pressure, I am a great problem solver and I work great in teams.


Please, find attached a copy of my CV and my certificates. I would appreciate a reply from you soon and I will be pleased to provide you with further information if necessary. I am sure I am the candidate you're looking for.

TIPS:

  1. Write at the top of the page the information of the person you are writing into. you should include their name, their title, and their address, also you could include the company's name.

  2. Use the same salutations, as if it was an email of application, dear Mr, or dear Miss, Dear Sir/Madam, etc.

  3. Within the first paragraph tell them who you are, and why you're writing. speak about where you saw the advert.

  4. In the second paragraph, you should mention your job, history and education. Where you graduated from., and the place where you have worked.

  5. Consequently, tell them why you would be a good acquisition. This is the moment to market yourself; speak about who you are and mention those personal assets that make you a good worker.

  6. At the end of the letter, express your willingness to help them with any other information that they might need. Also, tell them to find your curriculum and certificates.

  7. Sign off your letter with expressions likee: yours faithfully, yours, sincerely, best regards, regards.

  8. At the bottom of the letter, put your name, position, company and address.
